Although summer hasn’t officially hit the City of Toronto, it sure felt like it had last weekend for the Summerdaze kickoff party. Deep house music fans in Toronto couldn’t have been happier. There’s something euphoric about the connection between great music, good people, and beautiful weather, and all three were at the forefront of this kickoff to the summer season.
I have experienced Summerdaze parties in the past and have actively promoted them within my group of friends. They’re different. In a time where the Toronto house music scene seems so focused on profit, it’s become too easy to lose sight of the scene’s foundation. Not here. What I love most about these parties are the familiar faces and genuine human exchanges. The music brings us together, but the embracive atmosphere is why we stay.
The Summerdaze team is extremely excited about this season, and they have put in the work to make sure they top the last.
Local DJ’s Shea Marie and Members Only took advantage of the diverse early crowd with great sets, priming the stage for Hercules and Love Affair alumni Kim Ann Foxman, German producer Maayan Nidam and closer Terrance Kissner.
For me, Kim Ann Foxman was the highlight. From the moment she pressed play she had my attention. It wasn’t just me who was hooked either; I had friends who intended to stay for an hour that couldn’t pull themselves away from the dance floor. She was that good, but don’t take my word for it. Check out her Boiler Room set from New York City below.
Not to be outdone was the powerhouse that is Maayan Nidam. Let’s face it, not just anybody can spin back-to-back with Luciano, something Nidam is no stranger to. Her sound is nocturnal. With the sun officially set, Nidam took us from the Gossip patio to a private Ibiza gathering. For most, she was definitely the highlight. Check out a sample of a Juice TV recording from earlier this year below.
From start to finish the bartender’s were busy filling drinks to dancing partygoers as the deep sounds echoed throughout the Gossip premises. One thing’s for sure, the buzz is there and people are excited to see what else is in store for the rest of the season.
Make sure you follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for updates on upcoming parties and to get your seasons passes! Up next we have Waifs & Strays on June 8th at Burroughes & Rooftop.
See you there!
