Stiv Hey is quickly becoming one of the most sought after new voices in the global techno scene. Currently residing in Barcelona, the Italian DJ and producer is bringing his own interpretation of techno to dance floors and festivals around the world, a sound that he dubs ‘techno champagne’. His brand of tantalizing melodies has earned him nods from some of the biggest names in the genre, as well as a signing with Dubfire’s SCI+TEC label – Stiv Hey is showing no signs of slowing down. Beyond The Drop caught up with Stiv Hey to discuss his most recent release, his ‘Interference’ EP, as well as the pivotal moment that sparked his techno career and his many plans for the future.
You’re from Italy and currently live in Barcelona. How do you find the cities you live in influence your work?
Yeah, I come from a little town in the North of Italy and I moved to Barcelona some months ago. As an artist, I’m really influenced by the city I live in. When it comes to the creation process, that’s the result of everything you see, taste, listen, touch during the time before you start the creation, so the city an artist lives in plays a significant role in the final result of the creation.
Who were some of the DJs and producers that first got you into electronic music?
I definitely need to mention Sven Vath and Dubfire, as they’re both part of the night that first connected me with techno. It was my 18th birthday at Amnesia Milano, and Sven Vath was on decks and he played Dubfire’s remix of Grindhouse. When the drop came in, the sub-bass, the fresh smoke hit my face… I got hooked! I’m still chasing that feeling every day of my life.
From where do you draw some of your major influences for your unique futuristic techno sound?
I have multiple ways to get inspired, right now I’m into a lot of different styles of music. I listen to a lot of random experimental music and get ideas for my tracks out of them. I also really like working in front of scenic locations with my laptop and little keyboard, and write up there as the view generates ideas. I discovered this system works very well with my kind of brain. I get super inspired by high views.
Tell us about your most recent release, your Interference EP!
I consider “Interference” as a new starting point. With this EP I showed a new style, very different from the one I was known for. It is less dark, more sexy and melodic techno. It’s the result of a year and a half locked in the studio looking for the “innovation”. Now that I got it, expect much more music in this direction –
Techno Champagne 🙂
You have been all over the world over the past few months, from China to Romania. What are some highlights?
Yeah, my life’s on fire! Literally every day is a highlight. My last Stiv Hey Tour was amazing. I travelled the world from side to side, discovering incredible places and meeting so many special people. My China tour was definitely a big highlight of the first part of the year. I never expected to find such a party crowd in China – they are ready for techno! I must mention also my show at Mauritius Island, such an unbelievable place and crowd. I finished my 8-hour set with 200 people clapping their hands non-stop for 10 minutes. I’m still speechless thinking about their love. (I will be back soon!)
What are some of your favourite tracks or artists right now?
My favourite track at the moment is “Alive” by Dave Sinner. Dave is an amazing producer from Barcelona (one of the most talented guys in the scene) and this track “Alive” always generates the best vibe in my sets. Go check him out!
What advice do you have for up-and-coming electronic artists?
Stick with your sound, hard work and dedication always pays off. Don’t emulate others, follow your vision and make it big! “Thinking big” is the key. For more advice, I’m happy to answer all your messages on Facebook or Instagram. I manage an open account where I keep a strong connection with my fans, just message me.
What is next in store for Stiv Hey?
So much going on at the moment! A partner and I are launching our brand of events named “Memories” that it’s really going to be a game changer in the party world. Expect something incredible. Also my “Stiv Hey” on tour project is coming back very soon, from the beginning of October you will find me in Europe, Asia and the Americas (dates will be revealed soon). Music-wise I’m hyper-productive, making A LOT of new music, so expect a full release schedule for 2018.
