As Unsound Festival prepares for the 15th instalment of its experimental music and arts program, expectations abound in Poland’s medieval city of Krakow.
It’s not only the musical displays that set Unsound apart, but more importantly the venues and manner with which they are presented. Think decrepit cathedrals and eerie cinematic style à la David Lynch.
Unsound has repurposed buildings across the city for the Flower Power edition of the festival. Citing inspiration from the notion of human sustainability, its organizers are determined to continue “resisting the temptation to spin off in a dystopian musical spiral.”
This year, places like the Stalinist Nowa Huta steel mill and the tram hall of the Inżynierii (Engineering) Museum will be on display. They’ll host exclusive live sets by artists like Hyperdub’s Lee Gamble and Australian-Icelandic performer Ben Frost.
Tickets to many events have already sold out. Headliners include DJ Bone and DJ Stingray debuting together in the brutalist Hotel Forum, as well as experimental artists like Berlin’s Pan Daijing.
The festival runs from the 8 to 15 October and will also see artists like GAS, Robin Fox, Avalon Emerson and Nina Kraviz.
Although the schedule already includes a week jammed full of club nights, film screenings and visual performances, the organizers have also just released the final editions to the packed daytime program.
While many events are already included in the modestly priced festival pass, Unsound has announced that many of the daily workshops, installations and panels will be free to attend.
Some events include a writer’s workshop by Resident Advisor’s Will Lynch and a discussion on modern technoactivism hosted by Discwoman’s Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson.
During the day, Unsound has also designed guided tours around the antique city, commentaries on environmental sustainability and discussions on the psychological effects of a capitalist economy.
With intimate audiences, commissioned installations and a penchant for pushing the boundaries, Unsound’s latest edition stands to be anything but ordinary.
