Not that this is news to most of us, but Maya Jane Coles is a force to be reckoned with. For years, the UK native has been gripping us with her unique sound, sultry grooves with trip-hop influences and eerie vocals that always keep us wanting more. Maya has graced the decks all over the world – more than 40 countries and counting – and all of the worlds largest festivals and clubs, always welcomed by adoring fans that she keeps moving and grooving until the very last track.
The self-made powerhouse has always proved that she is more than just a DJ – her latest endeavour saw her writing, producing, engineering, arranging, mixing and performing every track for her most recent, and most substantial, body of work, a 24-track album titled Take Flight.
Since the release, an onslaught of remixes have followed, an impressive group of artists reinterpreting Maya’s latest masterpiece. The line-up includes reworks by Tiger Stripes, M.F.S, Boxia, Wax Wings and Mak & Pasteman, each artist giving one of Maya’s originals a new spin.
Here are some of our latest favourite tracks from Coles & co.
Weak – Maya Jane Coles
The first track on the album takes a hold of us, pulls us in and winds us down into the journey that is ‘Take Flight’. Hypnotic vocals and psychedelic trip-hop sounds make this one a departure from the dance floor, but still a favourite of ours.
Cherry Bomb – Maya Jane Coles
Also featured on the preceding EP ‘Won’t Let You Down’, Pete Tong dubbed ‘Cherry Bomb’ the Essential New Tune – and it is clear why. The spacey, melodic track will have you lost in a trance and reaching for the repeat button.
Weak (Mak & Pasteman Remix)
This remix from UK duo Mak & Pasteman gives the original a heavy lick of techno, building layer upon layer and eventually erupting into a full-blown dance floor heater – we can’t wait to hear this in a late-night set on a dark dance floor soon.
